Florida Collegiate Summer League Shines on All-Star Day

FCSL’s All-Star day included a scout showcase, home run derby and game.

The scout showcase, where select players showed their talents in front of Major League Baseball scouts, included pitching sessions, hitting sessions, running the 60-yard dash, throwing accuracy drills and more for the players, who would have their chance to shine in front of more than 20 scouts.

In the 60-yard runs, Orlando and University of Texas at San Antonio's own Aaron Powell clocked in with the best time, which was a blistering 6.41 seconds.

The FCSL Home Run Derby, which brought fans to their feet as Leesburg Lightning 1B Joe Ezekiel (LaFayette College) finished with seven home runs (13 in total) in the final round, taking the victory over Winter Park Diamond Dawg, Steve Sabins (Oklahoma State), who finished with five (11 in total).

The All-Star game brought FCSL’s 50 finest players to the field for its fifth annual game. In front of a great crowd at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium, the West All-Stars (Belleview, Clermont, Leesburg) defeated the East All-Stars (Orlando, Sanford, Winter Park) 3-1. The West pounded out 11 hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning by Lightning 1B/C and All Star Game Most Valuable Player Jose Jimenez (University of Tampa).

The winning pitcher was Clermont RHP Tyler Powell (Belmont Abbey) and Orlando LHP Joey Munoz (Bethune Cookman) took the loss. Seven other West pitchers helped Powell and the team hold the East to just four hits and one run. Belleview’s Andy Mee recorded the save. The East pitched five more after Munoz, giving up no runs and five scattered hits.
